BLC Day 7: Wool & Leather Coat Refash - The Plan

I can't tell you why, but I have a fondness for white wool coats.  Not white-white, but more winter-white. Something about them looks sophisticated and classic to me, almost regardless of style.  I shared with you yesterday my observation regarding the sudden trendiness of shopping at thrift stores, and that I, too, have shopped them to see what treasures I could scoop up.  Last week while traveling in Grand Rapids, MI for work, I stopped by the Goodwill store located on Kraft Ave. to see what they had.

I found this winter-white wool coat.  It was in very good condition, but it didn't fit me well, especially around the biceps which is always a fitting challenge for me.  But, I thought there was enough fabric to do "something" with it.

I also found this men's leather coat.  Although there are some signs of wear, it, too, was in very good condition, with a zip-out lining and a very nice (and DEEP) zipped pocket located in the left facing.

Given that they're on trend this season, I initially thought about using them both to make a refashioned bomber jacket, and began flipping through my pattern collection.  While I'm pretty sure I would want to make some style alterations - like remove some of the excess fabric under the arms and at the sides - some of the immediately available options included...

...but then I saw this image today in the September 2016 of Real Simple magazine...

Cute coat, huh?  And, I could see being able to use this Simplicity pattern as the base to make this one work.

I think I'm leaning more towards making Simplicity 2508.  I hope I have enough fabric to work it out.  Stay tuned.

Be blessed!

  2. I am really enjoying this series of posts. I, too, am a Goodwill shopper. We are lucky to have a Goodwill outlet store in town – nothing on hangers, nothing on shelves; everything in big bins like they use for construction trash. You need leather gloves because of sharp objects and broken glass.

Fortunately, the clothes are kept in bins separate from the other items. I have found some great pieces with store tags still on them, never worn. If I find something I really like, even if it doesn't fit, I'll take a chance on being able to repurpose it. I have a blouse on my sewing table right now that has wonderful braided details but the blouse does not fit at all. It's my intent to find a complementary fabric, salvage the details, and add them to a new blouse. I also found a great leather jacket with some where that may end up becoming a vest. Still to be determined.
